Boat Specifications

Dragon boat manufacturers produce boats with slight differences in specification, especially those from traditional Chinese craftsmen. (Traditionally, masters do not actually use a blue print or black and white plan). Boats therefore, from different regional events, will differ. The following specifications for a standard "medium sized" boat is for reference only and reprinted from publications by the HKDBA for local and international championships.

Boats taking part in Stanley Races are medium sized. It is not uncommon to see "big sized" (50 people) dragon boats for fishermen's races in other districts or "small dragons" (8 paddlers +1 steerer, mostly made of fibreglass) for ladies. (Foreign teams usually call them "baby dragon boats"). Occasionally in Mainland China even bigger boats may be used for exhibition races.
